New Technologies introduced in hydrometeorology sphere

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Recourses of the Republic of Azerbaijan  is introducing new technologies in the hydrometeorology sphere in order to improve the forecast and early warning system and strengthen control over hazardous hydrometeorological events caused by the recent changes in the climate.

As part of these measures, 18 automatic meteorological stations, 8 automatic rainfall measurement gauges, 5 automatic water level gauges and 2 ultrasonic flow meters have been installed in the remote areas with harsh terrain in order to insure precise and continues monitoring of hydrometeorological conditions in these areas.

This information was provided to ICTnews by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Recourses. According to the ministry, the video surveillance systems have been also installed in order to control the change of water level in the estuary of the Kur River as well as to monitor meteorological conditions in the different areas of the Bazarduzu-Shahdag-Tufandag ecosystem at the altitude up to 3,700 metres.

The systems will operate in the real time mode.  At present, special equipment is being installed to control floods on the Kish River and monitor meteorological condition in Lazard.  The French “Meteo France International” and U.S. “Weather Central” companies are already completing the activities they have been implementing jointly in order to modernize Azerbaijan’s meteorology system so that it would meet the latest requirements.
