MCIT will help to determine in advance coordinates of earthquakes
“The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev gives special attention to the development of information and communication technologies sphere in Azerbaijan. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan (MCIT) also takes serious steps in this direction”, told ICTnews the director of the Institute of Cybernetics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Science academician Telman Aliyev.
According to him, thanks to the special care given by the state to this area, significant achievements have been made in the ICT sphere. “A seismic-acoustic telemetic station was created for the first time in Azerbaijan. It operates with the use of oil wells which have stopped their operation. The station helps to detect earthquakes 15-20 hours before they occur. Such stations exist in Azerbaijan for more than 2 years. There are now 5 seismic-acoustic stations in the republic.
They are located in the Gum island, Siyazan, Neftchala, Shirvan and Naftalan. However, at the present stage we cannot predict the coordinates of a place where the earthquake will occur. So solve this problem, we invited to Azerbaijan the world’s most prominent seismologists from Canada, Italy, Panama, Greece, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. We think that with the help of these experts we will soon be able to predict coordinates of earthquakes.
A scientific project is now being jointly implemented by ANAS and MCIT in this respect. It is expected to be accomplished within a few months. MCIT helps us to receive signals from the stations through satellites, and send these signal to our server. This makes it possible to determine coordinates of earthquakes.
Besides coordinates, we will also be able to predict the time, when the earthquake will take place. For example, we were able to predict the earthquake, which recently occurred in Iran. Such stations are expected to be employed by other countries as well. We plan to erect the 6th seismic-acoustic station in Nakhichevan on the Iran-Turkey border. If these six stations are not enough to determine coordinates of earthquakes, we will build additional seismic-acoustic stations in Azerbaijan. Also, we intend to implement a large-scale project, involving Azerbaijan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Ukraine and a single satellite covering these countries. If such a project is realized, we will be able to determine in advance the seismic situation in the entire region”, T. Aliyev told ICTnews.
