Azerbaijan puts forward its candidacy for membership in ITU Council


The Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan has put forward its candidacy for the membership in the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

According to information revealed by “ICTnews” online news service, Azerbaijan is being nominated for ITU Council membership from a group of countries of “C” region. Elections to ITU Council are held once in 4 years with candidates being nominated from 5 regions.

Based on the results of elections, 46 members are elected to ITU Council. Last time, when Azerbaijan was taking part in these elections, it held talks over the support of its candidacy a few days before the start of the Plenipotentiary Conference. This time, talks will be conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan in order to know beforehand which countries will support Azerbaijan’s candidacy. At present, Azerbaijan's candidacy is being considered in ITU.

The next elections to ITU Council will take place during the regular Plenipotentiary Conference, which will be held in Pusan city of South Korea from 20 October to 07 November 2013. Note that the Plenipotentiary Conference is the supreme body of the ITU responsible for forming future policies of the organization.

The conference convened every four years determines the general policies, adopts four-year strategic and financial plans, as well as elects by the organization's senior management, Board members and members of the Radio Regulations Board.
