M'sian Transport targets 90% transactions online
The Road Transport Department (JPJ) continues to encourage the public to use the online system for transactions such as renewing driving licences and road taxes, as well as paying summonses. According to Department Director-General, Datuk Solah Mat Hassan, the efforts are being carried out to reach 90% of motorists by 2015. “We want our customers to opt for the online service to make it easier for them to renew their driving licence or road tax in the comfort of their home or office, without having to go to the JPJ office,” Solah said in an official statement.
There are 135 JPJ offices nationwide and there is no plan to open new ones to encourage the public to deal with the department through its online service. Meanwhile, the department is increasing mobile service counters at public places, including farmers’ markets, to make the online platforms more accessible to motorists.
According to the department’s statistics, since the online system was introduced, only 5% had opted for the system, compared with 67% who still preferred the counter service, in 2010, two million motorists renewed their driving licence at the counter, while only 10,017 people did so online.
