Employees of National Nuclear Research Center participate in international training course on nuclear technology
Employees of the National Nuclear Research Center of the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies (MCHT) participated in the international training course on “Gamma spectrometry of nuclear materials” held in Germany.
The training course was organized for the experts of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM) countries (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) involved in the analysis of nuclear and radioactive materials.
The courses are organized within the framework of the “Creation of Regional Network for Nuclear Expertise” project funded by the Science and Technology Center in Ukraine.
During the training, which took place at the Institute for Transuranium Elements of the European Union's Joint Research Centre in Karlsruhe, Germany, participants were acquainted with the modern equipment and software, which is being used at the world's leading nuclear centers for determining the activity, isotope composition of nuclear materials and the degree of enrichment of nuclear fuel.
Presentations on the following topics were made at the training:
- Gamma radiation ignition sources, nuclear transitions
- Theoretical knowledge about interaction of gamma radiation with medium
- Devices with different resolution capacities for detection of gamma radiation
- Structure, working principle, efficiency and resolution of gamma spectrometry based on germanium detectors and coaxial planar forms
- Detection of illegally transited nuclear materials using spectral obstacles
- Spectrometers and software used in the nuclear forensic (criminology); MGA, MGAU, MGA++, FRAM, IGA, Spectraline.
- Capabilities of the Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart, innovations
Within the 5 day-training, practicums on methods and techniques of identification of isotopic composition, degree of enrichment of nuclear fuels (uranium, plutonium and MOX) with different degrees of enrichment and combustion at the reactor were held.
At the end of the course, the participants carrying out the categorization of nuclear materials were awarded certificates.
