Over $ 1 billion damage was caused by hacker attacks in 2015
According to Internet Crime Complaint Centre (IC3) report, last year, more than $ 1.07 billion damage was caused globally by hacker attacks.
According to the document, during the previous calendar year, IC3 received 288,012 complaints from users who had become victims of hacker attacks. Of these, 2453 complaints were filed by users who had undergone hacker attracts launched with the use of extortionate software. $ 1.6 million damage was caused by Trojan-encoders.
In 2015, extortionate software was not the most common threat. However, statistics show that the income coming from it continues to grow. IC3 first mentioned extortionate software in its reports in 2012.
During the second half of 2014, the centre received 1402 complaints related to this threat. By that time, the damage caused by cryptographic software amounted to $ 490 thousand.
It should be noted that IC3 reports only the cases where victims of hacker attack file a formal complaint with the FBI. According to Kaspersky Lab, 179,209 computers were infected with extortionate software in 2015.
As CNN reported last month, referring to the FBI, damage caused by cryptographers amounted to over $ 24 million.
