Azerbaijan successfully represented in International CanSat Competition
A team of students from the National Aviation Academy took part in the International CanSat Competition. A satellite model prepared by the team was selected for the finals from a large number of satellite models that had been presented to the competition by around 100 teams from the leading universities of the US, Canada, India, Iran, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Turkey and Switzerland.
Note that the International CanSat Competition, which has been held since 1998 with the support of NASA, American Astronomical Society (AAS), American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and the other leading space organisations, aims at stimulating university student’s interest in space technologies.
Despite the fact that our country was represented for the first time in this competition, the Azerbaijani team called "NaaSAT" was able to leave behind a number of US universities in the "PDR-Preliminary Design Review" and "CDR-Critical Design Review" rounds of the competition and to join the list of the top 40 teams.
The team also took part in the next round of the competition held in the US state of Texas. During this round, the satellite model was launched into the sky and a signal - telemetry was received as envisaged in the program.
Thus, the first satellite model project, which was developed by the students of the National Aviation Academy with the support of Azercosmos OJSC of the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies, has been successfully realized, and the next step towards the development of the space industry in the country has been made. This achievement can serve as an example of successful cooperation between a scientific - educational institution and a commercial enterprise.
It should be noted that the development of a satellite model in our country and its participation in the competition is one of the successful projects of the space industry - one of the leading areas of Azerbaijan's non-oil sector that have been developing rapidly over the last few years.
At the same time, participation in the CanSat project makes it possible for local experts to gain necessary experience in the development of nano satellites.
