Azerbaijani delegation takes part in International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference
An Azerbaijani delegation led by Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations Faig Tagizade attended the 60th Annual Regular Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna.
Addressing to the conference, the representative of the Republic of Turkey demanded that the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant in Armenia be closed as early as possible because of the major threat it poses to the region.
The representatives of the Azerbaijani delegation, which included experts from the National Nuclear Research Center (NNRC) of the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies (MCHT), also spoke at the conference. They said that the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant poses great threat not only to Azerbaijan, but also to the entire region.
The Azerbaijani experts noted that "the further operation of the nuclear power plant creates big danger for the whole region because the plant uses outdated technologies and is located in a seismically active zone".
Within the framework of the conference, the Azerbaijani delegation held a meeting with the head of the Department of Technical Cooperation of IAEA Martin Krause and the employee of the said department, manager of projects for Azerbaijan, Ms. Katya Dufre. During the meeting, issues relating to the implementation of the current projects and further cooperation were discussed.
Then, the representatives of NNRC met with the representatives of the Russian Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation and the Argentinian company INVAP. During the meetings, the sides discussed the development of human resources in Azerbaijan in the fields of nuclear science and nuclear technology.
