Apple is preparing another smartphone revolution
E-SIM card are already being used in iPad and some “Internet of things” gadgets, but electronic iPhone SIM cards are not yet available. Analyst firm IHS says that by 2019, Apple will begin to place eSIMs in its smartphones.
According to estimates by IHS, the number of eSIMs will increase from 108.9 million in 2016 to 986 million in 2021. Today there is no a single model of smartphone with eSIM, but wearable devices, gadgets and “Internet of things” items are already being equipped with built-in SIM cards.
Thus, Microsoft in partnership with Gemalto planned to equip with built-in SIM cards its own devices running on Windows 10.
Built-in SIM card allows iPhone owners to choose their own operator and tariff plan. However, the choice will be supervised by the manufacturer of the device. This means that Apple is expected to begin negotiations with operators as a tariff seller.
eSIMs at the moment are used on mass scale only on iPads. Thanks to the “Apple SIM” tablet can find the network in more than 140 countries and regions of the world. To connect on the spot, it is enough to choose the tariff plan with the desired validity period directly on the device.
At the first stage, eSIMs can be used in branded operator smartphones. The absence of a SIM card slot means for the cellular provider that the owner of the device will use his services, and will not enter the unlock code or go to another provider.
However, eSIM is not so cheap as to be used in low-end devices and operators don’t produce expensive smartphones under their own brand.
