The Android O release date may finally have been revealed
ANDROID O - also known as Android 8.0 - could have a release date in just a few days’ time, with Pixel and Pixel XL owners set to get the update first.
Android fans could soon be able to download and upgrade to Android O - aka Android 8.0 - with a renowned tipster narrowing down a release date.
Android O, which is also known as Android 8.0, could have a release date next week with Pixel and Pixel XL owners being the first to download it.
Renowned tipster Evan Blass said on his @evleaks Twitter account that Android O is scheduled for a release date next week.
He said the latest version of the Google operating system will launch on the week beginning Monday August 21.
And he said Android O is “most likely” to have a release date on August 21.
Google had previously said they would launch the Android O update in the third quarter of this year, which we only have a few weeks left off.
David Ruddock, from Android Police, had also tweeted that the Android 8.0 release date was imminent.
He said that it was set to be released during the first two weeks of August.
However, Ruddock added that the release date “could be pushed” back, which it looks like it has done.
The Google Pixel and Pixel XL will be the first devices to get the Android O update, as well as older Nexus handsets eligible for the upgrade.
Google have confirmed that Android O, which began testing back in May, is Android 8.0.
And there’s been much rumour about what the O in the mobile operating system’s name stands for.
It had widely been hoped for among the Android community that the O would stand for Oreo.
However, it looks like the successor to Nougat may instead be called Oatmeal Cookie.
The possible name for Android 8.0 was discovered in June by tech website Myce after they dug around in the code for Google’s upcoming mobile OS.
They found oc-dev mentioned a number of times within the code, which seems to follow on from former branch names used by Google.
Oc-dev is also referred to as OC-MR1 in messages relating to Android O.
If those two characters are initials for what Android 8.0 is called, then the most likely name for the mobile OS could be Android Oatmeal Cookie.
It would follow on from other treat-based names that Google called previous versions of Android, such as the current Android Nougat.
So far we know that Android O will feature notification channels, picture-in-picture video, adaptive icons, as well as support for multi-display.
The next-generation version of Android includes faster boot-up times, better performance, tweaked notifications and improved battery life.
But overall, Android 8.0 is not about headline-grabbing new features. Instead, it will double-down on performance tweaks that make the everyday experience better for users.
Smart text selection is also being introduced in Android O.
It will also include faster boot-up times, better performance and improved battery life.
Another new feature is notification dots - new coloured bubbles that appear beside an app icon when you have a notification waiting.
