DHL robots start delivering their first parcels in Germany
The mayor of bad Hersfeld, in Central Germany, gave the go-ahead for a pilot infrastructure project. In the next six weeks postmen and employees of the shipping service DHL will work closely with partners for robots. Autonomous cars will almost move independently through the city streets and deliver packages.
DHL openly declare their commitment to innovation and bold decisions. This fall was the start of the fleet formation of Autonomous vehicles, the first representatives of which were robots and Parcelcopter PostBOT. One flies, the second goes, and both carry parcels, using the skills of machine learning.
Drone PostBOT is a transport truck with a motor with a lifting capacity of 150 kg. It is supplied with a system of orientation in the area – first time on the route the robot follows, looking at the feet of the mailman a guide, and then be able to replicate this path on their own. He rides not fast, at a speed of 6 km/h, has a height of 150 cm and learns how to avoid obstacles, and to not interfere with pedestrians. The task PostBOT exactly the same: to take the goods at the specified coordinates.
Such robots need DHL in the first place in order to optimize the services for the delivery of orders from online stores. People are buying more – postmen often have to carry heavy boxes. But with this easy to handle the robot! It only remains to see how effective the machine will be able to work in a real street environment.
