Sharp’s 70-inch 8K TV is shipping this month for €11,199

Sharp will launch the first 70-inch 8K display in Europe at the end of April. Making the announcement at this year’s IFA 18 Global Press Conference, the LV-70X500E monitor will be aimed at B2B and residential users, priced at 11,199 euros.

Just as 55-65 screens sizes have been driven by 4K, Sharp says 8K will drive 70-inch and larger. It could even herald 128 inch sizes. “Consumers have the room, “ says Sascha Lange, Vice President Marketing and Sales Europe. “With 8K, displays with 70 inch diagonals like our LV-70X500E will become a standard size for the living room and much bigger screens will soon follow!”

Sharp does not yet envisage any commercial content available in 8K, saying that users will upscale, or watch user generated material. Although the brand says 8K developments are happening. Netflix has shot Lost in Space in 8K, says Lange.

Bernard Fontaine, Head of Technical Innovations at France TV, says the broadcaster will trial 8K acquisition at Roland Garros in two weeks. This footage will be viewable on site, not broadcast.

The LV-70X500E is able to display 79 per cent of the BT2020 colour space and has a FALD backlight with local dimming control over 216 areas. The set sports eight HDMIs in total, with four dedicated to delivering a native 8K signal. HDR support covers HDR10 and HLG. Peak brightness is 1000 nits, says the brand.
