China to create giant underwater robots
China began the development of large and relatively inexpensive unmanned submarines XLUUV, equipped with artificial intelligence. Submarines are designed to perform a wide range of tasks, including exploration, mining and the ramming of enemy ships. This publication reports the South China Morning Post.
It is expected that the robotic submarine will be commissioned after 2020. They will not replace conventional submarines that are managed by people, but with their help the Chinese are planning to challenge the position occupied by the naval forces of the Western powers after the Second world war. According to the developers, a new class of submarine will face military courts of the United States in the South China sea and Western Pacific ocean.
Experts say that artificial intelligence will allow submarines to independently carry out combat missions, but we are not talking about full autonomy. These machines will coordinate with manned systems such as, for example, diesel-electric submarines, type 039 and the final decision will in any case take people.
Existing models of unmanned underwater vehicles (eng. unmanned underwater vehicles, UUV) are very limited in actions. They have small size, and their deployment requires another ship or boat. New submarines comparable in size to the ordinary courts, and their compartments are large enough for the placing of torpedoes or missiles. They will also be equipped with diesel-electric engine, but there may be alternative sources of energy that will support the efficiency of the apparatus for several months.
