The number of cyberattacks almost doubled in the world
“In the second quarter of 2018, the number of cyber-incidents in the world increased by 47% compared to the same period in 2017, and the share of targeted and mass hacker attacks reached 54% and 46%, respectively”, Positive Technologies, a company specializing in information security technologies, reports.
According to experts, the share of cyber-attacks aimed at stealing confidential data is increasing. Attackers were most interested in accessing personal (31%) and accounting information (22%), including passwords to online banks of individuals. The passwords were stolen mainly through the exploitation of vulnerabilities in various online sites - online stores, ticket sale services, hotel reservations, etc.
The most common methods of attacks were associated with the use of malicious software. The share of attacks on web resources increased from 23% to 32%. In addition, the share of attacks on Internet devices also increased because of the emergence of new botnets such as PyRoMineIoT, Muhstik and Wicked Mirai.
In the second half of the second quarter, a large number of attacks on crypto-currency networks like Verge, Monacoin, Bitcoin Gold, ZenCash, Litecoin Cash were registered. As a result of these attacks, $ 100 million were stolen. The share of such attacks also increased compared to the same period in 2017.
The study also notes that state organizations still remain a favorite target for cybercriminals, while intruders are primarily interested in commercial secrets, for example, payrolls, employment contracts and any other documents of limited access, DailyComm reports.
