Twitter considering an edit button to change tweets, says Jack Dorsey
Twitter is considering introducing an edit button to correct errors in tweets, according to the social media platform's chief executive.
Jack Dorsey said Twitter has been examining the “use cases” for an editing tool that would allow people to quickly correct mistakes they may have made in their posts.
Speaking at an event at the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, Mr Dorsey warned such a feature could be prone to abuse by people who make a controversial statement with a tweet, then adjust it to remove the original meaning later on.
“You have to pay attention to what are the use cases for the edit button. A lot of people want the edit button because they want to quickly fix a mistake they made. Like a misspelling or tweeting the wrong URL. That’s a lot more achievable than allowing people to edit any tweet all the way back in time,” Mr Dorsey said.
Other social media platforms allow users to edit their posts but Twitter has never allowed this since its creation in 2006. Facebook and Instagram currently allow posts to be edited.
Twitter is already planning to remove the "like" function tweets in a move designed to improve the quality of debate on the social network. The founder admitted at a Twitter event that he was not a fan of the heart-shaped button and that it would be getting rid of it “soon”.
The feature was introduced in 2015 to replace “favourites”, a star-shaped button that allowed people to bookmark tweets to read later.
