Azerbaijan represented at Ministerial Meeting held within WSIS 2020
A virtual Ministerial Meeting was held within the framework of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS-2020) organized by the International Telecommunication Union.
The main topic of discussion at the event was bridging the digital divide – issues on mechanisms of global cooperation to accelerate the digital transition.
At the Ministerial Meeting, our country was represented by Deputy Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Elmir Velizade.
After welcoming the participants of the virtual round table, Deputy Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Elmir Velizade said that the coronavirus pandemic, which humanity is currently struggling with, has increased the importance of relations and the need to eliminate the digital divide.
The Deputy Minister noted that the development of high technologies in Azerbaijan, including the ICT sector, is a priority of state policy.
“The projects being implemented in our country take into account domestic needs and provide opportunities for regional access. For example, Azerbaijan, which has successfully implemented the satellite programme, first of all, in addition to meeting national needs, is providing satellite services for a wide range of countries, including Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa,” Elmir Velizade said.
At the end of his speech, the Deputy Minister said that projects such as the Europe-Persia Express Gateway (EPEG) fiber-optic cable system and Trans-Eurasian Information Super Highway (TASIM) serve to reduce the digital divide in the region.
