Visa investigates security breach

Credit card firm Visa is investigating reports of a security breach at a European payment processor, with cardholders in eastern Europe potentially affected.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Visa Europe said that the company is working to protect its customers.

Visa Europe has been informed of a potential data security breach at a European processor and an investigation is underway.

"We are working closely with our member banks to ensure cardholders are protected," the spokesperson said.At the same time, the Romanian Banks Association has warned Romanian credit card holders to look out for suspicious charges.

Earlier this week, Romanian state-owned CEC Bank said that it would block and reissue credit cards to any customers who may have been affected by the breach.News service IDG reported that CEC Bank is in the process of reissuing 17,000 payment cards as a result of the incident.

At this time last year, Visa and fellow credit card issuer Mastercard were both subjected to distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks from hacktivist group Anonymous. It is not known who is behind the current attacks, should the reports prove to be true.
