Microsoft releases update KB5001335 for Windows 7
Microsoft has released a new monthly rollup for Windows 7 devices, though very important to know is that only computers enrolled in the extended security updates (ESU) program are getting it.
And this is because Windows 7 has already reached the end of support and now only companies paying for custom support are still provided with security patches.
The new update available for Windows 7 is KB5001335, and it includes both security and non-security improvements.
In addition to the typical Patch Tuesday security updates for Windows apps, Windows Kernel, and Windows Media, the update also resolves some time zone issues for Volgograd, Russia and The Republic of South Sudan.
But the more important change concerns a security problem that Microsoft has also corrected in Windows 10.
“Addresses an issue with security vulnerabilities identified by a security researcher. Because of these security vulnerabilities, this and all future Windows updates will no longer contain the RemoteFX vGPU feature. For more information about the vulnerability and its removal, see CVE-2020-1036 and KB4570006. Secure vGPU alternatives are available using Discrete Device Assignment (DDA) in Windows Server LTSC releases (Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019) and Windows Server SAC releases (Windows Server, version 1803 and later versions),” the company explains.
There are two known issues in this update, but both of them have been there for quite a while. One of them is actually the error that you may be getting when trying to install the monthly rollup on a computer not configured to receive ESU.
“After installing this update and restarting your device, you might receive the error, “Failure to configure Windows updates. Reverting Changes. Do not turn off your computer,” and the update might show as Failed in Update History,” the company explains.
Windows 7 is still running on approximately 20 percent of the world’s PCs according to the latest market share numbers.
