Posts facilitate trade, UPU

According to recent statistics of Universal Postal Union, with over 660,000 post offices in 191 countries, mostly located in outlying areas, the postal sector is the world's biggest physical distribution network.

The UPU firmly believes that the postal sector can help small and medium-sized businesses take advantage of the globalization of trade and supports the World Trade Organization’s “Aid for Trade” initiative by working on logistical and customs issues with organizations such as the International Air Transport Association and the World Customs Organization.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, 80% of post offices are located in rural areas and in small cities, where 80% of the population also lives. The post office is often the only facility enabling people to gain access to national and global trade.

In Brazil, a UPU study shows that the postal service’s trade-facilitation programme, Exporta Fácil, available at 8,000 post offices and through the Internet, has enabled, since 2002, 10,000 small businesses to export their goods outside of the country.

Exporta Fácil programmes are now being expanded to other countries in Latin America, including Chile and Uruguay, through a project managed by the Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal, with financing by the Inter-American Development Bank.
