UN Working Group To Fight Cybercrime To Begin Work In 2019 - UNGA Resolution


The United Nations will set up a special group of governmental experts tasked with establishing rules and norms to create a system that would counter cyberthreats in the information security, its work will begin in 2019, according to a UN General Assembly's (UNGA) resolution.

"The Assembly then took up the report Developments in the field of information and telecommunications in the context of international security' (document A/73/505), containing two draft resolutions ... By provisions of draft resolution II, the Assembly would request the Secretary General, with the assistance of a group of governmental experts to be established in 2019 on the basis of equitable geographical representation, to continue to study possible cooperative measures to address existing and potential threats, including norms, rules and principles of the responsible behaviour of States," the United Nations said in a press release published on Wednesday.
 
In the resolution the UN member states have expressed concern over the fact that some states were boosting their potential in the field of information and communication technology (ICT) for military purposes.
 
The resolution stressed, at the same time, that the states were interested in promoting the use of ICT for peaceful purposes in order to create the world's common future in cyberspace.
 
"[The General Assembly] decides to convene, beginning in 2019, with a view to making the United Nations negotiation process on security in the use of information and communications technologies more democratic, inclusive and transparent, an open-ended working group," the adopted resolution said.
 
The resolution added that the future working group should held an organizational session in June in order to agree on organizational arrangements.
