The UN adopted a Russian resolution to combat cybercrime

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution proposed by Russia to combat cybercrime. According to RIA Novosti, 79 countries voted for its adoption, 60 voted against it, and 33 abstained.

Among the opponents of the resolution were the United States, which said that the document “undermines international cooperation in the fight against cybercrime, while increased cooperation is required.”

Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Gennady Kuzmin, for his part, said that the special committee referred to in the resolution will hold the first session in New York in 2020 in order to gather the maximum number of countries. “The resolution expressly stipulates that the future special committee should take into account the results of the work of the Vienna Group of Experts on Cybercrime, the report of which we expect next year,” the diplomat added. The session is scheduled for Aug.

The resolution stipulates that the UN General Assembly will establish a special intergovernmental committee of experts representing all regions, the agency writes. The structure will develop an international convention on countering the use of information and communication technologies for criminal purposes. 47 other states co-sponsored the document together with Russia.
