“Interest and enthusiasm for the IGF continues to grow and we greatly look forward to both the IGF and the prestigious Bakutel Exhibition in beautiful Baku”

On behalf of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), welcome everyone to the 2012 Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and the annual Bakutel Exhibition.

UNDESA not only convenes the IGF each year, but it also plays a major role in the forum as a participatory stakeholder, sharing knowledge and learning from the diverse and expert laden group of Internet governance stakeholders from the public, private and civil society sectors. Interest and enthusiasm for the IGF continues to grow and we greatly look forward to both the IGF and the prestigious Bakutel Exhibition in beautiful Baku, Azerbaijan.

First convened by the United Nations Secretary General in 2006, the IGF is an open, inclusive and transparent forum, which welcomes governments, intergovernmental organisations, business representatives, the technical community, civil society organisations, as well as any individual Internet user interested in Internet governance issues.

The congregation of all these unique participants in the same place, bringing together so many diverse perspectives, represents the most valuable asset of the IGF, as it transforms it into a vivid discussion space where every voice has a say and every idea could have the potential of influencing Internet policy making elaborated somewhere else in the world.

The IGF also brings incredible capacity building opportunities, as such a vast variety of stakeholders are able to convene to learn from one another, and to build long-standing relationships that are so crucial for development. I invite everyone to use this week to build new valuable partnerships as this is truly a unique experience.

Indeed holding these two events together will attract increased attention to both events, bringing together all stakeholders to learn about the latest innovations and developments in telecommuncations and information technologies.

Azerbaijan is truly a leader in this field, as a premiere IT hub in the region and also as a champion in providing essential e-government services to its citizens. These achievements are directly supporting its rapid social and economic development and we are committed to working together with Azerbaijan and the rest of the countries in this beautiful region in continuing this great progress.

Mr. Wu Hongbo,
United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs
