Microsoft rolled out the Windows 10 Creators Update last month, and naturally this brought an increase in adoption for the company’s latest operating system.
Statistics provided by NetMarketShare, however, show that this increase isn’t substantial, though the gap between Windows 10 and Windows 7 has reduced, most likely because of the arrival of the new version.
At this point, Windows 7 is the number one operating system on the desktop with a share of 48.5 percent, followed by Windows 10 which reached 26.28 percent.
On the other hand, the good news for Microsoft and Windows 10 fans is that this version is getting closer to Windows 7, not only as a result of its growth but also following the dropping market share of the operating system launched in 2009.
Last month alone, Windows 7 declined from 49.42 percent to 48.50 percent, while Windows 10 managed to increase from 25.36 percent to 26.28 percent. This means the gap between the two was reduced by 1.84 percent in a single month and the pace is likely to accelerate in the coming months as more systems are upgraded to the Creators Update.
Enterprises are also expected to speed up the transition to Windows 10, as many of them typically wait for Microsoft to release one or two major OS updates before performing the transition to a new Windows version. With the Creators Update now live, this transition is likely to at least start in the coming weeks, so by the end of the year, many more of them should already be on Windows 10.
As for Microsoft, the adoption of Windows 10 seems to be going at a slower pace than the company expected, as the initial forecast was that 1 billion devices would be running the OS by the end of FY2017. More recently, the firm admitted that this target could be missed, with the latest stats pointing to more than 400 million devices running Windows 10.
