Data leakage in companies increases by 5%

InfoWatch, an information security solutions maker, has provided information on major data leaks in 2018.

Data leak is caused by intentional or accidental actions (both by external attackers and internal violators), as a result of which confidentiality of information is violated.

According to experts’ estimations, the number of reported data leakages in organizations in 2018 increased by more than 5% compared with 2017. Over 50% of all cases fell on high-tech companies, the public sector and medical institutions. Over the past year, there has been a significant increase in the share of data leaks that have happened as a result of actions of internal violators. During the same period, a decrease in the share of incidents committed through a network channel has been observed, InfoWatch reported.

The largest data leak in 2018 occurred in India at the AADHAAR system, the largest state identity data storage in the world. As a result, a key from 1.2 billion records, including personal data and biometric information, was put up for sale for only $ 8.

The largest data leaks in commercial companies occurred at the Marriott hotel chain (more than 500 million users were affected), Veeam Software Developer (440 million), marketing firm Exactis (340 million), logistics company SF Express (300 million), service startup Apollo (200 million), IT companies VNG (about 163 million) and the application Under Armor (150 million), DailyComm reports.
