Audi announces new tech for catching the next green light

Audi is rolling out a new technology that could make idling at red lights a thing of the past. The new tech leverages Audi's Traffic Light Information system and will be available on select 2017 and newer vehicles.

Known as Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory, or GLOSA for short, the new tech uses traffic light information to determine just how fast a vehicle has to travel in order to catch the next green light. In addition to reducing the annoyance of stop and go traffic, the tech also eliminates the need to sit idling at a red light, thereby reducing a journey's overall emissions.

"Audi is committed to moving America in many ways, including through the development of industry-leading connectivity and mobility solutions,” said Mark Del Rosso, president, Audi of America. "Not only do vehicle-to-infrastructure technologies like GLOSA benefit drivers today, they're also the critical steps needed as we continue toward an automated future.”

But just in case you do get stuck at a red light, the system also has a countdown to green, so you'll know exactly how long you'll have to wait before you can get going again.

The GLOSA system is currently only available in select metro areas, but Audi will be expanding the service over time.
