Sharp launches its first OLED TV
Sharp has launched its first OLED TVs in Japan. Acer, Huawei, Konka, Vizio, and soon Samsung are also embracing OLED technology for TVs.
As incumbents are abandoning LCD technology that has ruled the TV market for more than a decade, TV makers are looking for ways to transition to new display technologies such as OLED and microLED.
Most recently, Acer, Huawei, Konk, Xiaomi and Vizio have announced plans to launch OLED TVs and Samsung is currently investing heavily in a special flavor of OLED TV, so-called QD-OLED TVs.
Earlier this year, Nikkei reported that "Sharp's struggles at the high end are the biggest reason" for the company to turn its attention towards OLED TVs after 8K LCD TV have failed to excite buyers in its home country of Japan, despite plans to broadcast the Olympics in 8K.
Sharp has now officially launched the CQ1 series of OLED TVs. The TVs will be available in 55 and 65 inch sizes starting at 280,000 yen in Japan.
They are based on LG Display panels with 4K resolution. Sharp has developed a new 'Medalist S1' video processor and equipped the TVs with HDMI 2.0 ports.
Sharp's first OLED TVs run Google's Android TV operating system. This partnership expands to other regions, including Europe, where Sharp has launched affordable Android TVs based on LCD panels.
The company did not outline plans for regions outside of Japan but we can expect an update regarding plans for Europe around IFA time (September) and an update regarding plans for the US around CES time (January).
