Today is World Telecommunication and Information Society Day
May 17 is celebrated as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD).
This date is timed to the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865 and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union in 1969.
The main purpose of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as ways to bridge the digital divide.
This year’s theme for WTISD is "Connect 2030: ICTs for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)". It will focus on specific ICT-enabled solutions and emerging trends for fostering economic, environmental and social sustainability.
In our country, which has become a participant of the global information society, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies implements a number of measures to develop the information society under the "State Program on the Implementation of the National Strategy for the Development of the Information Society in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2016-2020", the Strategic Roadmap for the Development of Telecommunications and Information Technologies in the Republic of Azerbaijan and other sectoral programs. In accordance with these documents, large-scale measures are being taken in the country to expand ICT infrastructure and services, develop the high-technology sector, increase productivity and operational efficiency of business entities. Furthermore, some of the measures taken were the digitalization of government and social environment, providing information security, increasing the level of knowledge and skills in the field of ICT, developing national content, creating conditions for all members of the society to use the opportunities created by ICT.
As a result of the work done, the ICT sector in the country has become a leading and dynamically developing sector of the economy.
"To access the internet in the country, wired, wireless and mobile technologies are being introduced. The project "Fiber To Home" is underway to create a broadband internet infrastructure based on a high-speed optical network covering the territory of the country. Within the framework of the project Public Wi-Fi, free access to internet services in public places of Baku was provided. Secure internet services are provided by internet service providers and mobile operators.
The use of electronic signatures is expanding, and the number of its users is constantly increasing.
Steps are being taken to develop e-trade in our country. Minimum safety requirements have been set for e-trade platforms. For two years now, the Baku E-Trade Forum has been held with the participation of international experts. During the forum, discussions are held and recommendations are made to increase the share of e-trade in the domestic market.
To increase the level of knowledge and skills of the population on ICT solutions, including people with disabilities, to promote ICT in society, to stimulate the acquisition of ICT knowledge among youth, trainings, courses, conferences, forums, seminars, round tables, exhibitions, contests, quizzes and Olympic events are held, propaganda work is carried out through mass media.
Every year, events are organized within the framework of the Olympiad in Informatics among university students, International Girls in ICT Day and Safer Internet Day.
Support is being provided to the contest NETTY for the development of national content and the knowledge contest "I am Azerbaijani."
Of course, the work done on the development of the information society in Azerbaijan is not limited to the above mentioned, multifaceted activities in this direction are continuing successfully.
