The overwhelming majority of large enterprises have suffered data breaches in one form or another over the past 12 months, according to a recent survey from Juniper Networks. The study found that 90 per cent of the companies it polled reported falling victim to a breach, despite heavy spending on security protection. Nearly one quarter of the companies surveyed reported spending more than 25 per cent of their total IT budget on security.

Following an increase in cyber-attacks of government websites across the region, the Ministry of Information and Communication has called on government agencies to enhance the security of their respective electronic portals. According to the Ministry, two of the most common cyber-attacks include defacement, which changes the interface of a site, and denial-of-service attacks, which prevents users from accessing computer sources. The Ministry called on agencies to regularly run virus scans, use firewalls, change network administration usernames and passwords to secure their respective systems.

The Haryana government has decided to introduce biometric fingerprint scanners in around 2,622 government schools across the State in an effort to keep a check on teachers and deal with increasing absenteeism project, to be completed by August, is being implemented under the centrally sponsored scheme for information and communication technology in schools. The immediate trigger, however, were the many incidents coming to light where teachers, especially those posted in rural areas, coming to school only once in a while to mark their attendance in the register.
