Taiwan builds learning city network

The Taipei City Government has incorporated broadband Internet platform and educational resources from community colleges as part of its campaign to become a Learning city. A two-day fair dubbed “Learning City, Taipei” was held at Taipei City Hall earlier this month to launch the 12 community learning centres and the Learning City Network.
Among the attendees were Mayor Hau Lung-bin, city councillors and principals of Taipei’s community colleges. Hau noted that with the Taipei Free wireless network service becoming available at public spaces across town, Taipei is moving forward in its quest of becoming an ultimate “Smart City.”
Stressing the people’s rights to education, Hau remarked that there is a wide range of classes available at community colleges. He further said he believes that attending classes at these educational institutions is putting the concept of life-long learning into practice.
Noting that the Economist ranked Taipei first among 145 cities in education performance for two consecutive years, Hau attributed part of the achievement to those who are involved in community colleges.
Taipei city government has announced it will install free wireless service at city government buildings, administrative centres, public libraries, city hospitals and mass rapid transit stations next month.
