Amazon Worker Steals 726 iPods

The thing to do, apparently, when you’re bored at work is to just start stealing — that always leads to excitement. Between April and May, that’s allegedly what Todd Anthony Cofield, Jr. did while working at an Amazon distribution center in South Carolina. Authorities are saying that Cofield nabbed 726 iPods and 49 HP laptops during his spree. Who knew that stealing so much valuable technology would have people look into it?

Cofield is said to have falsified documents when working freight trailers to say that he had unloaded them when, in reality, he didn’t actually bother to do so. How he managed to keep over 700 gadgets out of sight is anyone’s guess. It’s rather unusual for a single person to be in charge of unloading an entire trailer in any given warehouse and even more unusual for folks to not notice there’s still odds and ends left in it.

And if he did unload them but didn’t deliver them to the correct department, how did he manage to get them out the door? Amazon is notorious for their warehouse doctrines and it’s unlikely that he hid them from security — which usually includes metal detectors. Given that the grand total of his gains came out to around $160,000 worth of goods, his method of acquisition is a curios.

Whatever the path, Cofield has managed to post the $50,000 bail. Though he’s innocent until proven guilty, that’s a lot of money for a warehouse worker to be slinging.
