Huawei has invested $40 billion on 5G R&D

Recently, Huawei’s rotating chairman, Ken Hu, revealed that in the past 10 years, the company has invested $40 billion in 5G R&D development. Huawei currently has 2000+ 5G patent with a total global share of 20% and more. Huawei’s R&D on 5G involves various technologies such as materials, chips, key algorithms, and heat dissipation. Hu Houkun said, “Our research on 5G is not only to pursue advanced technology but to enable consumers to better use advanced technology.”

According to Mr Hu, Huawei’s 5G technology has a peak rate of 10.3 Gbps in internal testing, leading the industry by 13.7 %, and the single-user peak rate is 1.86 Gbps, leading the industry by 15.5 %. Mr. Hu also mentioned that Huawei has acquired 50 5G commercial contracts, shipped more than 150,000 5G base station and its 5G commercial contracts come from South Korea, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, Kuwait, and many other countries.

The development and proceedings of Huawei’s 5G, as well as other aspects of the company, is now a major topic for discussion after the US placed a ban on Huawei. While many hope to see the Chinese manufacturer come out stronger with good business, some others hope that the company goes down the drain and never recovers. Recently, Huawei asked Verizon, the largest operator in the United States, to pay license fees for more than 230 patent. The total fees eclipsed $1 billion. This incident triggered strong dissatisfaction from US lawmakers and proposed to not recognize Huawei’s patents. However, this incident shows that Huawei’s 5G patents could cause a major upset to the US especially in 5G communication technology.

Huawei has 2,160 5G SEPs, followed by Nokia with 1516 5G SEPs and ZTE with 1424 5G SEPs. The likes of Samsung and LG have declared 1359 & 1353 SEP patents respectively. Ericsson also has 1058 SEP patent statements. The highest ranked American company is Qualcomm and its patents are almost 50% lower than that of third-place ZTE.
