Azerbaijan begins construction of sea segment of EPEG cable line
The terms of the EPEG (Europe Persia Express Gateway) fibre-optic cable line commission had been postponed from May to July, Delta Telecom reported.
According to company the reason for postponing is due to unavailability of a sea cable line segment which should be laid between Iran and Oman.
The work of laying the maritime segment has already begun and is expected to be completed within a month. Significant problems in the work are not expected. Meetings of the participants of the EPEG project are held regularly. The next meeting will be held soon in Oman. Delta Telecom will take part in its part of the work.
The construction of the Azerbaijani segment of EPEG cable line has been completed and the network is being tested.
Delta Telecom has carried out the construction of the Azerbaijani segment of EPEG, in the frame of the network infrastructure, infrastructure of international connections and networks to provide connection for transit containers which were installed. As Delta Telecom said earlier the testing of the Azerbaijani segment will take approximately six weeks.
June 8th 2011 a consortium of four leading telecom carriers from four countries signed the Construction and Maintenance Agreement for the new cable system — Europe-Persia Express Gateway (EPEG).
The EPEG will be a brand new high capacity fiber optic cable system which links Europe with Middle East and a possibility of further extension to Gulf regional countries and India subcontinent.
The system will pass from Frankfurt across Eastern Europe, Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Persian Gulf to Barka, Sultanate of Oman. EPEG members Cable & Wireless, Rostelecom, Omantel, and TIC will build and develop part of the network which operates through their own country.
The route via Azerbaijan will be organized on the basis of the capacity of the EPEG associated partner — Delta Telecom. The design capacity of the new EPEG system will be up to 3.2 Tbps with total length approx. 10,000 km, about 9,500 km is a terrestrial fibre cable. The system will be put in operation in May, 2012 with an initial capacity of 540 (54x10) Gbps.
EPEG will allow telecommunication transit route alternative to the Red Sea, Suez Canal, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea regions and can play an important role for traffic re-routing in case of earthquakes and disasters, which have been known to affect multiple systems at once.
