Nepal aims for technology-based policing
The office of the Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office (MPCO) has released a charter of short and long-term plans which includes moving the Nepalese police force towards a technology-based policing which will makes use of technologies such as CCTV’s, GIS, and GPS among others. The MPCO said that among its long term plans include the installation of community alarm systems, GIS and GPS, and the establishment of a data bank with close coordination with the Department of Transport Management, the community, government ministries, the private sector, and other concerned stakeholders. “The international standard for policing ratio is 1:200 people in Metropolitan police concept, but the current ratio is one cop to an average of 732 people in the valley where more than 4 million are believed to be living,” MPCO spokesperson Madhav Prasad said in a statement. With the use of technology-based policing, the police force would be able to mobilise their operations more effectively and efficiently.
