Malaysia to set-up database for social issues
The Social Institute of Malaysia, an agency of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (MWFCD), will be setting up a centralised database of information on social issues such as child abuse, domestic violence, poverty, and women development. “The centralised database will act as a one-stop centre for the compilation of information on social issues that links existing data from various concerned ministries like Health and Education,” MWFCD Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said in an official statement.
Shahrizat also emphasised the need for concerned agencies to regularly update information on the database. For Phase one of the project, the centralised database will gather relevant statistics and geographical information on social issues from six departments under the MWFCD, and on Phase 2 of the project, would involve incorporating relevant data from different ministries. The information provided in the database will help government ministries and agencies identify , monitor, and study trends on social issues, thus enabling the government and NGO’s to coordinate their efforts to address social issues more effectively.
