Taiwanese city introduces modern surveillance system
In an effort to lower the crime rates in the most populated city in Taiwan, the New Taipei City Police Department launched early this week, its new and advanced surveillance system, called the intelligence Integrated Centre (IIC), which will enable the police force to efficiently respond to crime incidents. The IIC will integrate information sourced from the Global Positioning System (GPS), GIS, and the 110 hotline telephone reporting system.
The IIC will compile images from over 13, 354 cameras in the existing road surveillance system. The Police Department plans to add 27,000 high resolution cameras by 2014 to further enhance its capacity.
The advanced image monitoring system is expected to help the police force in their ability to identify suspects and monitor criminal activities.
According to New Taipei Deputy Mayor Hou-Yu-Ih, the new surveillance system will cost NT$2 billion (US$68.94 million), and says that the benefits of the new system will definitely outweigh the cost as it will increase police efficiency and further enhance their efforts in ensuring public safety.
