Worldwide postal services generally contribute 1% of a country’s gross domestic product-UPU
According to recent statistics of Universal Postal Union, the worldwide postal sector employs more than 5 million people The world’s Posts annually process and deliver an estimated 433 billion domestic letter-post items, 5.5 billion international items and 6 billion ordinary parcels.
Some 660,000 postal establishments make the postal network the largest physical distribution network in the world.
Postal services in industrialized countries are among the top three biggest employers. The United States Postal Service employs 785,000 people, followed by Deutsche Post with 536,000 and France’s La Poste with more than 265,000.
Among postal services in developing countries, China employs 788,000 people, India 500,000 and Brazil 108,000. Economists estimate that postal services generally contribute 1% of a country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
According to a study by the Envelope Manufacturers Association Foundation for Paper-Based Communications’ Institute for Postal Studies, there are approximately 8.4 million jobs and over 1 trillion US dollars in revenue associated with the mailing industry in the United States. Postal services also contribute to the economies of developing countries.
In Nigeria, for example, the National Bureau of Statistics reports that the telecommunications and postal services sector contributed 2.90% to the GDP in 2008, compared to 1.83% in 2006.
