Facial recognition system implemented in railway transport system in China
Hohhot Railway Administration in China (Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region) has implemented on a pilot basis a facial recognition system developed by Chongqing Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to enhance the security of public transport passengers.
Generally station workers don’t have enough time to carefully check identification documents produced by passengers boarding the train. And tracking of violations with security cameras requires a lot of human resources.
The facial recognition system helps station workers to overcome these difficulties. It takes only 3 seconds for the system to detect identity mismatch, while a man usually spends 5 - 10 seconds on this. Besides, the accuracy of machine recognition is ten times higher than that of a human. The system is able to search the database matching photos taken on the spot with data stored in the database.
The facial recognition system has been efficiently used for a long time in some border areas of the country. The system is also being successfully used in the financial sphere.
