Proximity Hat – cap-guide for blind people
Scientist from the German Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have developed a special headgear, which enables blind people to navigate in space using tactile effects. The unit was called Proximity Hat.
The idea of creating such a gadget came up with the German researcher Florian Brown for a long time. The scientist has developed and assembled a fully working prototype of the device. Smart cap is equipped with six ultrasonic modules, each of which produces 50 measurements of the distance to surrounding objects per second. Range of modules varies from a few centimeters to several meters.
Once the sensor observes an object in its path, he gently presses down on the head of the person on the other side, which is the object. The closer the object – the more pressure that allows the user to approximately represent their position in space relative to a variety of surfaces and objects. In fact, blind person can feel the direction and distance exclusively with tactile touch headgear.
The convenience of such a system is unequivocal, as it leaves the other senses, such as, for example, hearing, unoccupied, and the human hand are completely free, allowing them to do anything. Inventor sees the application of its devices not only in the above mentioned field. Use Proximity Hat will be able, for example, fire in a smoky rooms, as well as representatives of other professions.
