Modular 'Blocks' smartwatch available for pre-order
There was a bit of a buzz when an idea for a modular smartwatch called BLOCKS (very imaginative) hit Kickstarter around October 2015. BLOCKS is the first modular smartwatch in the world, that much it can claim. But it was supposed to ship coming from its crowdfunding campaign last month, we’re hearing it will ship in October. Fortunately, it is out of Kickstarter mode and you can already pre-order it, if you fancy a modular smartwatch.
If you’re familiar with the concept, you’d probably be expecting to buy each module separately, much like Google’s Project Ara when it started. In actuality, BLOCKS is including 4 different modules when you purchase the smartwatch for USD$330, and you get to choose from 6 different modules – an extra battery module, a heart rate monitor, GPS, the “Adventure” module which gives you info on Altitude, Pressure, and Temperatures, a flashlight module, and a module with a programmable button.
You can purchase all of the modules, the two extra ones will cost USD$35 each. The specs of the smartwatch looks like this – you get a 1.39-inch AMOLED 400×400 Display powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 Wear processor and 512MB RAM. There’s a stainless steel casing, 4GB internal storage, and a 300mAh battery to give power to it all. The system will run under Android Marshmallow.
When BLOCKS came out, there were quite a few more modules listed down as possibilities, so we wonder if the company will be coming out with other modules for BLOCKS soon. Again, the smartwatch will ship in October of this year, with pre-orders open now via their website.
