Global smartphone installed base will tap 3 billion mark in 2016
According to the latest report from our Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) services: Global Smartphone Installed Base by Operating Systems for 88 Countries 2007 to 2022, global smartphone installed base will reach 3 billion mark this year, up 13% YoY.
The global 1 billion smartphone installed base mark was achieved in 2012 and the 2 billion mark was in 2014. We forecast that the 3 billion mark and the 4 billion mark will be passed in 2016 and 2020 respectively.
Android will maintain top spot as the world's most popular platform, followed by Apple's iOS. Tizen is among the faster-growing platforms over the next six years. Meanwhile, we forecast a flavor of China's own home-developed smartphone operating system will likely emerge from roughly 2018 onwards, based perhaps on Linux or similar, and will quickly gain ground in China.
