Google and Facebook will connect North America and Asia with high-speed cable
Google and Facebook have joined forces for a new project. The company wants to build between Los Angeles and Hong Kong fibre-optic cable the length of which will amount to almost 13 000 kilometres. In this project Google and Facebook will help Pacific Light Data Communication. It is assumed that the construction of one of the longest cables in the world will end by 2018 and will cost the two IT giants about $ 400 million.
The cable itself will include five pairs of optical fibers. Each pair can transmit data at speeds of up to 24 Tbit/s. Thus, the maximum capacity of the cable will reach 120 Gbps.
It should be noted that this is not the first such project being implemented by Google. Today, the Internet giant has six such “lines” running across the bottom of the ocean.
