OnePlus 5 goes official, set to become the flagship killer for 2017
After much hype, leaks and speculations, the new OnePlus 5 has been officially unveiled. Almost everything about the new ‘flagship killer’ was already out in the open and now we have confirmation.
The OnePlus 5 was officially unveiled in a TV advert during the ICC Champions Trophy final match and yes it does looks like the iPhone 7 Plus. The back comes with a dual-camera setup on the top left corner and yes even the antenna lines have been reworked just like the last generation iPhone. The smartphone comes with a slightly improved design over the OnePlus 3/3T and now slimmer and with rounded edges.
As for the specifications, the smartphone features the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and will be coming in two RAM and storage configurations, 6GB with 64GB of storage and 8GB with 128GB of storage. The display is again a 5.5-inch AMOLED panel with a 1920x1080 pixel resolution with ‘True Tone’ colour enhancements.
There has been excitement around the dual-camera feature as the company had said that it is working closely with DxOMark to “enhance your photography experience.” The smartphone offers a 16-megapixel sensor at the back with an f/1.7 aperture along with a 20-megapixel telephoto sensor that offer 2x optical zoom just like the iPhone 7 Plus. There is also an iPhone like portrait mode for sweet looking low depth of field shots. The front camera is an 8-megapixel sensor and offers a feature where the screen lights up while taking a selfie to fill in light.
The OnePlus 5 uses Smart Capture, it’s custom software alongside custom-made Sony IMX 398 image sensor to improve the imaging quality and clarity. The software combines optical zoom with multi-frame processing for zooming into frames. HDR too has been enhanced and it uses machine learning to optimise the scenes you are shooting.
Other features include a 3,300mAh battery, Android 7.1 Nougat with Oxygen OS, Dash Charging and a front mounted fingerprint scanner. Connectivity features include 4G LTE with VoLTE support, dual SIM card slots, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3.5mm audio jack, USB Type-C and GPS/A-GPS/GLONASS. The Dash Charge can charge up the phone faster than the Samsung Galaxy S8.
The phone will come in Midnight Black and Slate Grey colour variants.
As for the pricing, the 6GB variant is priced at $479 (roughly Rs 31,000) while the 8GB RAM version is priced at $539 (roughly Rs 34,300). The India launch is scheduled for 22 June and the expected pricing is Rs. 32,999 and Rs. 37,999 respectively for the two variants.
