The first 5G specification was approved

At a meeting held in Lisbon, Non-Standalone 5G NR (New Radio) was approved, an intermediate standard that describes the possibility of deploying 5G network technologies on existing LTE base stations.

So, the transition to 5G will pass smoothly: the deployment of NSA 5G NR networks is scheduled for 2019. However, cellular operators and equipment manufacturers can start work on a new “iron” now.

NSA 5G NR means support for low (600, 700 MHz), medium (3.5 GHz) and high (50 GHz) frequencies. More about the new standard will be told later this week, writes Android Central.

The characteristics of the “full” 5G – Standalone 5G (SA), which will later replace 4G LTE, will be developed by the summer of next year.

As representatives of Qualcomm stated at the meeting, “NSA and SA 5G NR will share the general specifications of the physical layer for the air interface,” which does not require significant additional investments from the operators.

As expected, the average real data download speed in 5G-networks will be 100 megabits per second, and downloads – 50 Mb / s. In this case, the “ping” (network response timeout) will not exceed 4 milliseconds (for 4G LTE this value in real conditions is about 20 ms).

In Russia, according to the government program “Digital Economy”, 5G communication should appear in 2019-2020, but it will take time to deploy the networks. 5G technologies will be tested during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
