Azerbaijan puts forward its candidature for ITU Council membership
The annual session of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council began its work in Geneva, Switzerland. The session will run until April 27.
Azerbaijan at the meeting is represented by a delegation headed by Deputy Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Elmir Velizade.
Within the framework of the session, it is planned to hear reports on ITU activities, take decisions, discuss action plans for the current and forthcoming years, financial documents and a number of other issues.
It should be noted that ITU is the leading agency of the United Nations (UN) in the field of information and communication technologies. The Plenipotentiary Conference, which convenes every four years and governed by the Governing Body, is the highest decision-making body of the ITU.
Only 48 out of 193 member countries are represented in the Council. Azerbaijan, being a member of the ITU since 1992, was elected to the Council in 2014 and during that period has actively participated in its activities.
Azerbaijan has put forward its candidacy for participation in elections for another term at the Plenipotentiary Conference, which will be held in October and November this year in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The representative of our country has also been nominated for the membership of the Radio Regulations Board.
During the session, in addition to participation in the discussions on issues on the Council’s agenda, extensive campaigning is conducted in connection with the elections. Numerous meetings are held, detailed information is provided on the country’s ICT potential and achievements.
On the first day of the visit, a meeting was held with ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao, at which bilateral relations were discussed. The meeting was also attended by ambassador Vagif Sadigov, the Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva.
