Huawei Watch 2 (2018) with eSIM support launched

Huawei has unveiled its latest version of smart wearable called the Huawei Watch 2 (2018) in China. This new model is integrated with nano SIM or e-SIM technology that connect the smart timepiece to 4G networks. This means that with this watch users can make and receive calls, use the web service and stream music without the need to be paired with their smartphone. Do note that not all telecom operators offer support for e-SIM.

The watch features a 1.2-inch circular AMOLED display with 328ppi pixel density and Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. The Watch 2 (2018) runs on Android Wear 2.0 and supports handsets running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and above. The smartwatch is kept alive by a 420mAh battery which also supports fast charging.

The watch is equipped with a heart rate sensor, a built-in GPS, a shortcut key to switch to a sports mode for tracking exercises, and more. One can also customise the shortcut key to launch an app of their preference. The watch can also track eight different kinds of exercises and monitor the quality of your sleep at night. There’s a Galvanic Skin Response sensor, a barometer, an accelerometer, a gyro and a compass. There also a Firstbeat motion algorithm that will guide you through workouts. On the connectivity front, the watch comes with NFC, Bluetooth 4.1 LE, GPS+Beidou, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, 4G LTE, and eSIM.

For those interested in the slightly upgraded device, the eSIM variant of the watch will come in at 1,988 Yuan (roughly $310), while the nanoSIM model is available for 1,888 Yuan ($294) and the standard Bluetooth variant for 1,688 Yuan ($263).
