Beyond Black, Rose Gold Increases in Acceptance for Smartphones, Finds Strategy Analytics

A new report from the User Experience Strategies (UXS) group at Strategy Analytics surveying consumers in the US, Western Europe, China and India has explored consumer preference for smartphone color. Black continues to be the most preferred color globally, followed by silver. But the preference gap between these and other colors is decreasing, with rose gold making strides particularly for females.

Key report findings:

- Globally, more than half of respondents were interested in black and silver while more than a third were interested in white and rose gold.
- Rose gold is rising in popularity. It is now the most preferred color for females in the US and China.
- Respondents in China appear to be the most accepting of ‘other’ color choices for their next smartphone.

Christopher Dodge, Associate Director and report author commented, “Black and silver dominate color preference in all regions surveyed. But it’s preference after these two colors that’s changing. Rose gold is definitely rising in popularity. The gap between black and other colors is also closing considerably.”

Added Chris Schreiner, Director, Syndicated Research UXIP, “There is a definite increase in interest for alternatives to black. But respondents are still concerned about the robustness of their smartphones, particularly with ever increasing price-tags. There is an opportunity to expand color through OEM-branded cases.”
