32% of companies still use Windows XP
Microsoft is gradually preparing to discontinue support for its Windows 7 operating system, which this year marks 10 years, however, as statistics show, many large companies are in no hurry to abandon it or even older Windows XP.
According to Spiceworks, in 2019, 32% of companies still use Windows XP on their devices – 10% less than two years earlier. Recall that Windows XP was released in 2001, Microsoft stopped supporting it in 2014, and the OS no longer receives security updates.
As for Windows 7, 79% of all companies participating in the study continue to use it. Although this indicator has decreased by 5% since 2017, it still remains very high.
As explained in Spiceworks, the presence of older versions of operating systems on corporate devices is due to the use of outdated applications that cannot work on newer operating systems and the built-in software that is not updated by the manufacturer. In many cases, the installation of new versions of the operating system simply lacks funding and other resources.
The good news is that 67% of all companies using Windows 7 plan to upgrade to newer versions of the OS by January 2020, when its support will end. Another 25% plan to wait for the end of support and only then switch to the new OS.
