Representative of Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies participates in UNESCAP’s online meeting
The 76th session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) was held via videoconferencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Representatives of 51 member states and three associate member countries, as well as officials from the ESCAP secretariat and other international organizations and institutions participated in the event.
At the video event, Azerbaijan was represented by an employee of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Emil Ahmedov.
The work done in member countries in the field of promotion of transport and logistics, development of transport communications, information and communication technologies in the era of sustainable development was discussed at the meeting entitled “Promoting economic, social and environmental cooperation on oceans for sustainable development.”
Information was provided on the measures taken in our country to eliminate the socio-economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic at the session entitled “Regional cooperation in overcoming the socio-economic impact of global health crisis.” The participants were also informed in detail about the Extraordinary Summit of the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States against coronavirus, which took place on April 10 via a video conference at the initiative of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Chairman of the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking countries Ilham Aliyev, and the summit organized on May 4 in the format of the Contact Group of Non-Aligned Movement Countries.
Moreover, information was provided on the work done and achievements in the field of transport in Azerbaijan and projects of international importance initiated by our country at a session entitled “The implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific.” Furthermore, it was reported that the Republic of Azerbaijan has joined the Intergovernmental Agreement on Dry Ports with a corresponding statements and reservations.
During the event, 10 countries (Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Nepal, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Uzbekistan) were elected members of the Governing Council of the Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology, one of the five regional UNESCAP institutes. Taking into account the fact that the meeting was held via a videoconference, their election took place by acclamation, and not voting by traditional secret ballot.
It was also decided to hold the next meeting on April 26-30, 2021 in Bangkok (Thailand) on the topic “Regional cooperation to address the socioeconomic effects of pandemics and crises in Asia and the Pacific.”
It should be noted that Azerbaijan has been a member of UNESCAP since July 31, 1992. The country is actively involved in a number of projects implemented within the framework of the Commission in various fields, including transport, and constantly participates in its events. The Commission plays the role of an important platform for the countries of the region to discuss and consider economic and social issues, as well as enhance regional cooperation.
