Chrome OS laptop sales almost quadruple from last year
Stock Apps staff estimated the size of the global market for laptops running the Chrome OS operating system for the first quarter of this year.
The demand for Chromebooks is growing rapidly: from January to March inclusive, about 12.0 million of these devices were sold globally. This is 276%, or nearly four times, compared to the first quarter of 2020, when sales were 3.2 million units.
The current picture is due to the ongoing pandemic. Due to the transfer of schoolchildren and students to distance learning, the need for laptops for the educational sphere has sharply increased, where Chromebooks are the best fit.
The largest player in the global Chromebook market is HP, with a 36.4% share in the last quarter. Lenovo is in second place with 25.9%. “Bronze” went to Acer – 11.9%. Thus, these companies collectively control almost three quarters of the global industry.
In the first quarter of this year, the Chromebook market reached an all-time high. Most likely, in the foreseeable future, the high demand for such computers will continue. IDC analysts say about this, in particular.
