Students of National Aviation Academy once again take part in “CanSat” contest

The satellite model team "NaaSAT", which was established under the National Aviation Academy, once again took part in the International Model Satellite Contest "CanSat".

A satellite model prepared by the team was selected for the finals from a large number of satellite models that had been presented to the competition by 87 teams from the leading universities of the US, Canada, India, Iran, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Nepal and Turkey.

Note that the International CanSat Competition, which has been held since 1998 with the support of  NASA, American Astronomical Society (AAS), American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and the other leading space organisations, aims at stimulating university student’s interest in space technologies.

"NaaSAT" was able to successfully pass the "PDR-Preliminary Design Review" and "CDR-Critical Design Review" rounds of the competition and to join the list of the top 40 teams.

The team also took part in the next round of the competition held in the US state of Texas on June 11.

During this round, the satellite model was launched into the sky and a signal - telemetry was received as envisaged in the program.

Despite the fact that our country was represented for the second time in this competition, the Azerbaijani team was able to leave behind experienced teams from a number of universities of USA, Italy, Nepal, India and Canada. The Azerbaijani team even left behind the team from Poland, which won the last year’s International Model Satellite Contest "CanSat".

Thus, the first satellite model project, which was developed by the students of the National Aviation Academy with the support of Azercosmos OJSC of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies, has been successfully realized, and the next step towards the development of the space industry in the country has been made.

This achievement can serve as an example of successful cooperation between Azercosmos and  the National Aviation Academy.

It should be noted that manufacturing of a model satellite in our country and its participation in international competitions is one of the successful projects of the space industry, which has been dynamically developing in Azerbaijan over the recent years.

By participating in the project "CanSat",  local specialists have gained valuable experience, which they will successfully use in future for developing nano and other types of satellites.
